Denim for Every Occasion

As a student in New York, I have a lot going on at once. One day, B.C. (before covid), can consist of going to school, lunch with friends, internships, errands, and god forbid it’s a Friday and I have weekend plans in the afternoon as well! Planning outfits for each of these events can be exhausting, not to mention how much time it wastes… so remember those jeans I told you to get in Three Steps to a Better Closet on a Budget? Well, I’m going to show you just how versatile they can be!

Occasions for denim can be determined by their wash. The lighter the wash the more casual the occasion. So let’s start with work or internship outfits:

Black Jeans

Typically jeans are only reserved for casual Fridays but what if you could dress them up? Start with your black jeans. These should be fully black, with no vintage wash and no rips. Pairing it with a nice blouse or your white tee and oversized blazer instantly makes it more professional. The goal is to cover up buttons while the dark hue of the jeans disguises the pockets to pass them as fitted slacks. Add a nice pair of shoes like closed-toed block heels or flats and you can easily pass as business casual!

Dark/ Medium Wash

Next, the medium wash is the perfect staple for nice dinners with friends and family. The darker shade of blue creates a cleaner look like a new pair of pants with a fresh coat of dye. Because of the blue tint, it opens up colorways to pastels and softer tones you wouldn’t typically wear with black. Again, heels or cute booties will bring the staus of this outfit from a quick lunch to dinner and dessert!

Light Wash

We’re all very familiar with light wash jeans. These can be the most fashionable and easiest to style because of how loose the expectations are for the occasions where they are allowed. These can be torn, acid washed, over-sized, and patched making it a great tool to expressing your style and individuality. These are appropriate for any casual occasion. Here are some ways to style them:

Dark dark jeans are my favorite… no wear or wash coloring…not black, just dark blue.
But in contrast I love my worn, faded denim jacket. It’s a favorite go-to.
